Plan, plan, and plan some more

Planning is free. Take a good look at your bathroom and take inventory – everything you have, everything you think needs fixing or replacing, and take notes. From there, you can start budgeting.

The idea is to find out what’s most important, and what fits your budget. Maybe installing all new tiles would be a bit too harsh for now, but you can still upgrade other elements and end up with a revamped bathroom!

Details, hardware and fixtures

Details are extremely important for the look of your bathroom – light fixtures, faucets, towel racks, drawer pulls, mirror frame… all of these can really make the look if given proper attention.

And better yet, replacing these is a pretty small investment.

Look into new options for the details and you’ll find that simply replacing these already makes a huge difference.

Look for the best price

During your planning and research, it’s always wise to look for as many options as you can. First, because you may find inspiring ideas you hadn’t considered before, and second, because you may find lower prices than expected.

Use your existing plumbing

Sometimes a bathroom remodel will demand you mess with plumbing, but since we’re talking about ways to save money, do your best to stay away from plumbing. Reconfiguring pipes and breaking up walls adds a lot to the cost, so if your main goal with this remodel is purely visual, don’t mess with plumbing – instead, use your existing plumbing and start from there.

Refinish instead of replace

Replacing stuff is (almost) always going to be very expensive. If your problem is that your tub and/or shower is a little yellow, a simple refinish will make everything look brand new while saving you a lot of money you would otherwise spend on new products and installation.

Same goes for minor cracks and ugly grouts – all of this can be fixed without the need for replacing a whole lot.

Tile work

While replacing tiles all around the bathroom might come at a hefty price, replacing a small section is perfectly doable. For example, the shower area often has different tiles than the rest anyway, so why not replace only those?

As for the rest of the bathroom, re-grouting will already do them huge favours and help bring the whole thing together.

Open shelves

Open shelves are great because they can be implemented without installation or wall drilling – even the stylish ladder shelf can be brought up and immediately make its place on your bathroom without any further effort.

Plus, open shelves are nice for organization’s sake, making things easier to reach and always on display, but also as a visual treat, since you can purposefully display things in an organized manner to increase your visual appeal.
