How about getting to know a bit of Portuguese culture today? Located on the Madeira Island in Portugal, Funchal is a city known for its gardens, its harbor, and its wine cellars.

More than that,

It has also become quite famous because of the Santa Maria Street - a whole street containing gorgeously painted doors!

There are about 200 doors painted in the most diverse set of buildings, from houses to restaurants to galleries. This “project” was made because the street was feeling the effects of age and people weren’t really stopping by to check out the local businesses.

Because of that,

Some artists were invited to create something unique and attractive, that would make people stick around for longer. A successful project, we have to say!

Since we don’t have the space to show you all 200 doors, I picked a couple of my own favorites to give you a taste, but you can find a lot more photos on the internet.

Mermaids are mythical creatures found in folklore throughout many different cultures around the world. which makes them a really good choice for a painting - since there are tourist who visit from all over the globe. There are many details to this door; each time you look at it, you find something different and that’s why I fell in love with it.

We’ve talked about 3-D street art here before, and honestly, I didn’t think anything else would impress as much as those artists did, but these doors definitely surprised me! Especially this 3-D one - it’s just so incredible because of the depth and perfection of it.

The Little Prince is a classic book known all around the world as well, which also makes it a great choice for an artist. While the door itself may look simple compared to some of the other doors on this list, if you love the classics like I do, then I’m sure you’ll love this door.

This door looks so cool and even kind of creepy! Also, I can’t say this with 100% certainty, but I’m pretty confident this door is from a security company place - based on the sign next to the door.

Which only makes me think:

Aren’t these artists just incredibly talented? Not only can they create beautiful pieces, but some of them also make a connection with the business the door belongs to. That’s remarkable!

Simple Pattern

A simple pattern can be quite special too. With all the right colors, this artist simply nailed it on this door. I’d totally get one of these for my own house! Wouldn’t it be a lovely way to welcome guests?

Giraffes are among my favorite animals, but I have to say the lions and meerkats completely stole the show on this door! If you’re a fan of the animal world, you probably fell in love with this door too, right?

This door is hypnotizing both for the artist’s talent and the intriguing character. It’s definitely open for interpretation. In my head, this looks like someone trying to choose whether to take the “good” path or the “bad” path. And something with a dream involved… It’s a thinker! How would you interpret it?
