Goodbye winter, hello spring! The season of blossoms and new beginnings is here and there are a few important home maintenance tasks you should look out for.

Most of these are to assess any damage that may have been caused during the last season, but also as a way to prepare your home for Spring. The weather isn't particularly harsh like winter, except now you can show off your garden and outdoor spaces more freely and that’s why you have to make sure everything is in order.

A great way to start is by following our Spring maintenance checklist below!

“Change your life today. Don't gamble on the future, act now, without delay." – Simone de Beauvoir

Roof inspection

One of the most important steps on a home maintenance checklist is the roof. It’s your main line of defense against weather hazards, after all.

Your roof can get a serious beating during the winter. Whether it's from blizzards or excessive snow, it's always a good idea to inspect it so you can start spring with peace of mind. Water damage is also a common problem caused by ice dams, which can seriously destabilize your roofing structure.

Luckily, a roof inspection is fairly quick and might just show that no repairs are necessary. But if they are, you'll want to know sooner rather than later.

Gutter inspection

The gutter may be simple in theory, but it operates a very important part in keeping your home safe. Poor drainage can lead to all sorts of water damage that are exceedingly difficult to repair. This damage can be caused to your roof, your exterior paint, and even your foundation and landscaping – since improper water drainage will basically drown your garden and lawn.

You want to make sure your gutters are not clogged and that their overall structure is still sturdy to last the season with no issues. Besides, gutter cleaning is pretty simple and inexpensive, making it worth the investment.

Chimney sweep

You might be unlikely to use the chimney during Spring, or at least, not for a whole lot. But during the winter you probably did and it's not too crazy to assume it may need some maintenance.

Most homeowners leave it until closer to next winter to deal with the chimney, but you can already cross this one off the list with a chimney inspection. If no repairs are necessary, great! But if they are, you won't find out at the last minute, when the cost of chimney cleaning is usually at its highest.

Check faucets

Your outdoor faucets that were temporarily put out of commission during the winter can now be reissued. Remove any winterization tools you may have installed and make sure the pipes aren't frozen before you start using them again. If you notice any issues, contact a plumbing pro in your area

Reseal your deck

With the pleasant climate of Spring you can enjoy your outdoor spaces more freely, but your wooden decks can take a serious beating during the winter. Now is the best time to reseal your deck and ensure it’s protected – an unsealed wooden deck will absorb humidity, which can cause it to mold and rot over time.

Besides, you can take this opportunity to stain your deck and give a new look all in one fell swoop. Combine this with our other Spring maintenance tips and you’ll have an incredible outdoor space to enjoy throughout the season.

Concrete inspection

Concrete is a material that can really suffer during the winter. Whenever physical matter freezes over, it will slightly contract in size and then expand as it unfreezes. This can be devastating to concrete, which is why it's so common to see your driveway crack during or after the winter.

And once it cracks, it can only get worse. It's highly recommended to patch it up as soon as possible, so if you notice any cracks on your walkways, driveways or foundation, be sure to add this one to your Spring checklist for home.

HVAC inspection

You probably had to make good use of your HVAC system to stay warm during the winter, which means that now is a good time to have the whole system inspected. For example, it might be time to replace your filters and clean the air vents to ensure great air quality and energy efficiency.

It's also common for pests and critters to seek refuge inside your air ducts, causing bad odor to circulate around your house and often making noise inside the vents.
