Laundry rooms can get chaotic really fast. The smaller it is, the easier it is to notice it too – a single day of negligence can turn an otherwise neat room into a complete mess. And especially now that most of us are still locked up in our homes due to the coronavirus outbreak, this is even more noticeable.
Luckily, there are simple ways to make your laundry room a much more calming environment so that it doesn’t turn into chaos when you need it the most!

1. Make space
Most people have small laundry rooms, but that doesn’t mean we can’t make space. You can add some counter space on top of the washing machine, for example, and have that as your general folding area.
But if that’s not possible, then consider cabinets, open shelves, utility hooks on the walls or behind the door – anything goes! There are many creative ways to make use of the space you have without the need to redesign the entire room.
2. Keep it organized
Keeping everything in its proper place is crucial to maintain a well organized laundry room. To make it easier on yourself, be sure to upgrade your laundry room storage! Use baskets, corners, shelves, and decide where everything goes first, so that you always know where to put things and automatically keep it more organized.
3. There’s room for decoration
Staying practical is always good, but no decoration at all could make your laundry room look like a hospital – sterile and impersonal. Be sure to add at least a couple houseplants to bring some life to your laundry room!
Besides, it’s never too late to shoot for a laundry room upgrade!
4. Avoid visual clutter
Clutter is often related to a messy environment, and the amount of cleaning products and other laundry items can make for a visual mess even if they are properly organized.
A way around this is to use your own custom bottles… or just hide them. Cabinets, baskets, and hidden compartments are perfect for this!
5. Go for cabinets
Open shelves are great for practicality, taking less space and being easier to install… but they will always show the clutter. This is not a problem for kitchens where you can simply stack bowls, but might be a bit too messy for a laundry room.

Consider cabinets instead, since the closed doors can hide away anything and keep the room looking neat and clean at all times.
6. All-in-one solution
Not everyone has a laundry room per se, lots of homes only have something closer to a laundry closet – a little corner with a washing machine and… not much else.
But that’s not exactly a problem. In fact, many can see it as an advantage – a smaller space means you have to be more practical and there’s less room for chaos to ensue.
- Make some counter space over the washing machine for quick folding or organizing on the run
- Keep a folding table handy (you can use your ironing board!)
- Use the inside of the closet door for utility hooks or baskets.
7. Style matters
We go on and on about practicality, but that doesn’t mean you should shy away from being stylish. There are many creative ways to go about styling a laundry room, but in short, don’t be afraid to look for inspiration, to paint the walls, to refinish or repaint cabinets… you’re going in and out of this room every single day, so it’s not too much to ask for it to look nice!
8. On-the-go solution
Let’s say you can’t afford new cabinets or anything too fancy right now and your laundry room doesn’t have a whole lot of room to spare, meaning your laundry storage is limited. An on-wheels caddy such as this can get the job done just fine – place your most important cleaning supplies on it and keep it beside the washing machine.
If you’re not comfortable with how it looks, you can even find a little corner to hide it. It’s an on-the-go solution perfect for a small laundry room organization.

We’ve mentioned cabinets are better than open shelves when it comes to laundry rooms and that still stands… but this is basically a laundry corner. Installing cabinets here would make it claustrophobic and probably darker, so open shelves fit a lot better.
And they can still work wonders, as long as you take some time to properly organize what items will be on display – you can use small baskets to keep similar items together and make it easier to pull them from the shelves without knocking off anything.
10. Labels
And speaking of organization, using labels for your bottles, baskets and containers is a great way to keep things organized.
