Loading the dishwasher is one of those chores that you just have to do. But did you know there’s a way to get the maximum efficiency for each load? Just a few basic tips will enhance your appliance’s performance. Here’s how to load a dishwasher for maximum efficiency.

We all know this, but it’s good to set some ground rules first. It’s good to know how to load a dishwasher with pots and pans. And those go straight to the bottom. This allows the spray to hit all the items at once.

The following items should be placed on the bottom rack:

  • Plates
  • Bowls
  • Pots
  • Pans
  • Trays
  • Silverware

The following items should be placed on the top rack:

  • Cups
  • Mugs
  • Fragile items
  • Glassware

Ensure that everything gets cleaned by arranging the plates from tallest on the right to shortest on the left. If possible, try to lean everything in towards the center so that the bottom rack projects more water to the top rack. This may sound like the basic 101: how to use a dishwasher for dummies, but it’s just good to go over the basics every now and then.

Only Run When Full

To make the most out of your appliance, only run it when it’s completely full. This is both energy efficient and water efficient. If you’re having trouble remembering when it’s clean or dirty, just buy a little “clean/dirty” reversible magnet. Then you can run that dishwasher under maximum efficiency.
