No matter what, wine lovers will eventually have to deal with wine stains. It’s part of the nature of the beast. There will always be that night where someone had a little too much and a few drops spilled. But don’t let that ruin your day (or your carpet). Here’s how to clean wine stains out of nearly anything.
How Do You Remove Red Wine Stain from Wood?
There are a few things to keep in mind when cleaning wine off hardwood. If it hasn’t dried yet you can dab at it with a wet napkin or towel. Otherwise, a combination of hot water and oil soap can help take away the dried red wine stain. Remember to try and blot the stain, as wiping back and forth might actually affect a larger area.
How Do You Get Wine Off a Painted Wall?
Your walling goes through a lot. Every now and then after a big party, someone could get nudged the wrong way or spill some wine on your walls. This can be remedied in the following way:
- As mentioned before, dab, don’t wipe
- Oxy-bleach tends to work the best with walls
- Use a towel to press the oxy-bleach against the stain for five minutes
- Failing that, use a mix of clear dish soap and hydrogen peroxide
- Put that on a towel and blot the stain, as the mixture is thick enough to adhere to the wall
- Remember that modern latex paint does not get stained by wine
How to Get Wine Stains Out of Stone Countertops
Combine either soda water or detergent with warm water and try to “brush” away the stain. It helps if you use an actual soft-bristled brush as opposed to a cloth, but the latter works as well. Finally clear the area with some more warm water to finish it off.
How to Remove Old Red Wine Stains from Carpet
Don’t buy into the myth that white wine will remove a red wine stain. That is completely false. There are a few tried and true methods to removing red wine from carpet. Here’s just a short list of the following:
- Hot water
- Club soda
- Salt
- Hydrogen peroxide and soap
- Ammonia
- Linseed oil and rottenstone
- Talcum powder and hydrogen peroxide
- Baking soda and vinegar
How to Clean Laminate Floors/Counters
Fortunately the only way red wine can do damage to laminate is to be left there long enough to become a stain in the actual color. Otherwise wine can be easily mopped up with regular soap and a water mop. Laminate is easy to clean for a reason.
Cleaning Upholstery
As with every other instance, blot the stain, don’t wipe it into the material. A substance called isopropyl rubbing alcohol will eat away at the wine while preserving your wood. And you can follow that up with a detergent solution.
