Organizing the closet is always desirable but often daunting. So daunting in fact that many people give up before they even start, which is understandable. Going through years of clothing and figuring out what to keep can be difficult, especially since you have to put it all back again once you’re done sorting through it.

And yes, doing that blindly is hard, and that’s why you need a system that works. When you are in with the right mindset and a plan, you’ll get it done much faster – and most importantly, without tiring or stressing yourself out!

With this guide, you will find your way through the mess and learn how to organize the closet easily!

Settle on a clear goal

Before you even start messing with your closet, it’s important to have a clear goal in mind. Why are you going through this process right now?

Is it to get rid of old/useless clothing? To make room for new ones? To make it more aesthetically pleasing? Is it just for the sake of having a more organized space?

This might seem trivial, but your goal can greatly influence how you will choose what to keep and what to get rid of in the following steps. If your goal isn’t clear, you might struggle to make decisions and actually make progress.

Start with a purge

Now that you’ve made up your mind, it’s time for action.

I think one of the best ways to start is with a massive purge. Look at your closet and immediately put aside everything that you know you don’t want or won’t use anymore.

You might end up making some hard decisions since we get attached to pieces of clothing quite often, but try to be realistic – if you haven’t used it in more than six months, you can probably toss it.

If you want to know more about a method that works for this sort of thing, try the KonMari Method!

Separate into categories

During your initial purge, you might already want to separate clothes into categories. There are three basic categories we usually stick to when doing this: keep, donate, and toss.

You don’t have to be super neat about it, these can be just three different piles since we will put back all the pieces you do want to keep. So just go crazy for now and don’t worry – we’re organizing it better in a few!

Be quick

One weird tip that works really well for this kind of situation is to work fast. You will have to make tons of small decisions over and over, and it can get complicated if you stop and think about every single piece.

So don’t think about it too hard. Just make quick decisions and keep moving forward – you will get everything done much quicker and more efficiently.

When in doubt, you can refer to the KonMari method: look at your piece of clothing and ask yourself “does it spark joy? You shouldn’t keep gifts out of guilt if you don’t use them anymore, but at the same time, you don’t have to get rid of everything because of some arbitrary reason.

If you like it, keep it. Just try to be realistic with most of your pieces if you want to tidy up!

Learn to fold better

There are ways to fold your clothing that will save more space and preserve the pieces for longer as well.
