Dumpsters

A broad term that encompasses many different things, a dumpster is just a container for waste. This container can come in many shapes, designs, and most importantly, sizes. They can be as small as a wastebasket, or as large as a waste disposal vessel. While a special license and permit are required, there are many different types of trucks to choose from (2). Different models can include:

Projects

Of course, the reason you needed a dumpster in the first place was in order to have work done on your house. While certain jobs create more waste than others, nearly all large construction, renovation, and demolition projects do require a dumpster. Projects that require a dumpster include (3):

• • Siding
• • Roofing
• • Total home clear outs
• • Renovations
• • Swimming pool installation
• • Repaving a driveway

Size

Another factor to consider is the actual size of the dumpster that you'll need. For comparison, a 10 cubic yard dumpster is 10 ft, long. 7'6" wide, and 3'6" tall. It can hold ten cubic yards worth of trash, or the equivalent of driving a full garbage truck to the landfill three times (4). Depending on the job, you can have the following sizes delivered to your home.

• • 15 cubic yards
• • 20 cubic yards
• • 30 cubic yards

Roll Off Dumpster

Regardless of the size, you'll need a roll off dumpster to deliver the unit to your home. The term "roll off" refers to how the dumpster is dislodged from the back or the truck. The bed lifts front end up at an extreme angle so the dumpster part gradually slides off, usually guided by wheels along the bottom. This does mean that the unit can potentially damage asphalt so be sure to lay down some preventative plywood boards. Otherwise this isn't just the most efficient means of delivery, in a lot of cases it's the only means of delivery.

Junk Removal

Usually a faster job using smaller dumpsters, junk removal is simply the service of taking away unwanted debris or materials that are on your property. For situations that garbagemen either won't or can't do, just removal is the preferable service (5). There are quite a few materials that regular trash collection just won't touch, such as:

• • Tiles
• • Demo byproducts
• • Drywall
• • Dirt
• • Tires
• • Tree, branches, or stumps

Appliance Pick-up

When you have a broken, leaking, or simply older appliance, sometimes it's next to impossible to dispose of that yourself. If this is the case call in for appliance pick-up. If your refrigerator isn't keeping food cold, or your A/C is leaking, or if you have a TV that's blown out, professionals movers can haul off that equipment and get it out of your home. Some recycling programs may even be able to pay you (6).
