Do you often come home and find that you hate going through your garage? If you're like most people, your garage is probably a catch-all for everything you don't have room for in your house. You might have a section for lawn and garden tools and another for oil and car supplies with an area for your holiday decorations.

While the mere thought of cleaning your garage can overwhelm you, it takes only seven days to get a spotless and beautiful garage when you focus on one task a day. Keep reading to learn more!

Make a Few Piles

On day one, start off with piles of everything you see. Now is the time to decide what you want to keep and what needs to go in the trash.

  • Stop holding onto things that you think you might need. If you have items that are in good condition but no longer need them, see about donating them to charity.
  • Depending on the size of your garage, you may even want to rent a dumpster for the day or a few days.

There is no point in looking at garage storage until you know exactly what you have and what needs to be stored there.

Clean

Day two is your day to clean.

Avoid parking inside the garage and take the time to take everything outside. You can leave those things on the driveway until you finish. You'll also want to get rid of cobwebs and wipe down any organizational tools you have.

Cleaning hack:

Kitty litter is perfect for oil stains, especially when the oil is still wet. The litter will absorb the oil and leave behind a nice and smooth surface.

Decide on Storage

Now is the time to come up with a storage plan. The way you organize your garage will depend on if you already have a garage storage cabinet or if you want to invest in some new organizers.

Many people find it helpful to designate storage areas within their garages. You might decide to put your Christmas lights and other holiday decorations in an out of the way space until you need them. Same for other seasonal decorations.

For the things that you use regularly such as cleaning supplies, place them in an easy to reach spot.

Make Use of All Spaces

A common mistake that some make when organizing their garages is that they only use a few spaces. Don't rely just on the shelves you already have because there are tons of tools that let you make use of wasted space.

For example, a garage wall organizer hangs on the wall and gives you space for your favorite tools. You might invest in a rolling bench to use in your garden that you fill with lawn supplies or a rolling toolbox that you can move onto your driveway to work on your car.

Go Over the Garage Again

As you get close to organizing your garage, don't be afraid to go over it again. Imagine that you just came home from work. Are you happy with the way things are or wish you made different choices?

You may find that you want to hang your kids' bicycles from the ceiling or that you want to move your lawn and garden supplies closer to the door. It's helpful to get feedback from your spouse and anyone else who uses the garage, too.

Create a Spot for Coming Home

One of the last tips for creating the beautiful garage you want is with a spot designated for those times when you come home. This is especially important if you park in the garage on the driveway and enter your home through a door on the side of the garage.

Consider using shelving that gives you room for the things you bring home with you but don't want to take inside. A good idea is a cubby hole cabinet that allows your family to leave their shoes and bags outside.

You may want a spot where you can hang your keys if you keep your garage door locked.

Keep at it

No matter how you plan to organize your garage, keep at it. Depending on the size of your garage, it may take more than seven days to organize the space the way you want. It's easy to make a few changes in a weekend and keep making changes as you decide on what you want.

You may find that you need a garage tool organization shelf with separate spaces for your power tools and chargers or batteries and another spot for the gas and oil that your lawn tools need.

Using these steps can help you get the garage you wanted in as little as seven days
