Clean the Refrigerator Drip Pan
By the name alone you know it’s something that needs a regular checkup. Not all refrigerators have a drip pan, but most of them do. Do you know where to find the refrigerator’s drip pan?
- First, you need to remove the kick panel at the bottom front of your fridge
- Then, follow the defrost line to the pan
- Look under the refrigerator to find the pan (usually metal or plastic)
Be careful when removing it as the pan might be full of water. Also: it’ll be easier if you use a flashlight for that last part! Checking your fridge and its drip pan is incredibly important because mold can grow very quickly around your fridge.
Remove Water from the Water Heater
Okay, that may sound a bit weird, but it’s a fact: you need to remove that sitting water from the water heater. That will help remove any sediment that may be collected too! Remember to turn off electricity or gas to the water heater before getting started. Then you just need to follow a couple of simple steps to get that water heater drained. Reseal Grout
When you install tiles in your home, you probably already know that you’ll need to seal the grout to stop water from ruining it before its time. However, you might have missed the information that you need to reseal it every year! You can actually learn how to reseal grout, and it’s really important that you do it every year to prevent bacteria, mold, and stains all around your tiles.
You’ll basically:
- Apply grout sealant
- Wipe off excess
- Apply one more coat after 15 minutes
- Wipe off excess again
After 24 to 48 hours, it should be all set! Test it with some water, if it beads, then it’s all set. If the water gets absorbed instead, you might consider calling a pro to give you a hand.
Test for Water Leaks
Seems pretty obvious, but aside from the check up when you first bought your house, how often have you checked for water leaks? Doing so is really important since they can cause a huge amount of damage - both to your lifestyle and your pocket.
The simplest way to check for leaks:
Use the meter reading! Avoid using the water for about two hours and you’ll know if there are any leaks if the meter changes even when you’re not using the water. If that’s the case, then you might want to hire someone to find where the leak is coming from and, of course, fix it properly.
Reseal Stone Countertops
Another resealing matter, that is, if you have granite or marble countertops. Not all types of material need sealing and resealing, but most of them do, so you need to pay attention to that when building or making over your home. Both marble and granite need to be resealed every year!
Sometimes, you may even need to do it more frequently. You can test it by pouring some water on top of it: the more water it absorbs, the more it needs resealing. Want to know how to do it? It’s pretty simple! You only need to wash the countertop with soap and water, wipe it dry and apply the sealer. Wait for 15 minutes and then wipe the excess off.
