Veteran’s Day is celebrated on November 11th – a day to honor our war veterans in meaningful ways to thank them for their service!

As such, I want to highlight how you can honor our veterans on this important holiday, because many people love to help, but sometimes don’t know what is the best way.

As always, it’s important to note that Veteran’s Day is not to be confused with Memorial Day. Memorial Day is when we honor those who have passed away, Veteran’s day is to honor those who are still among us.

With that said, here are the best and most meaningful ways to celebrate Veteran’s Day!

“People may hear your words, but they feel your attitude." – John C. Maxwell

Offer help to a local veteran

Many veterans are in need of assistance. Try to locate a veteran’s family in your area and offer to help in any way you can.

A common way is to offer a ride, donate food, or simply be at their disposal for any assistance. If you have any special talent or run a business, you could offer them your services for free – it would be an incredibly generous gesture!

Donate

Donations are always appreciated. You can donate directly to a family, but many prefer to donate to foundations and institutions that help veterans. Give preference to a local one if you can, but you can always find an institution online if you prefer.

Your local veteran’s hospital is also a good choice!

Visit

Visit a veteran’s hospital. Especially during Veteran’s Day, many institutions will allow for visits. Schedule to go there and thank our veterans in person by offering them a slice of your time, as well as thoughtful gifts and letters.

Visit a veteran’s business. Many veterans have local businesses in your area, so give them a visit! Thank them for their service and if you can, indulge in their products or services as a more tangible way to honor them.

Visit a veteran’s home. You probably already know a veteran, either in your family or someone close to you, and that’s a great opportunity to pay them a visit. Bring gifts, time to spare, and stay with them a bit. Company is one of the best gifts!

Thoughtful gifts

Write a letter. A very personal gift that, while simple, is much appreciated. Few things are as personal and emotional as letters.

Dinner. If you fancy cooking, you can prepare a full course meal for a vet as a way to say thank you. Just be sure to check beforehand if they have any food allergies or restrictions!

Books. Almost everyone loves books. If you’ve already visited a veteran you can probably get an idea of what kind of book they would like.

Listen and share

Veterans always have stories to tell. Take a few hours to hang out with a veteran and lend them your ear. You will learn a lot from them, and you can then pass along those stories to others.

If you have their permission, you can even share them on social media for those who didn’t have the time to do it themselves.

It’s a way to listen and share their stories so that everyone learns about our veterans!
