After one year of waiting, October – aka month of spooks – is finally upon us! It’s time for the jack o’lanterns, skeletons, ghosts and witches to come out of their dungeons and into our hearts and decorations.
There’s something special about Halloween. It seems like every year we’re the folks from A Nightmare Before Christmas, waiting anxiously for Halloween to come so we can bring out the decoration and get in character. A bit of an exaggeration, sure, but a lot of people have this Halloween spirit in them and it’s fun to celebrate!
“Excellence is not a skill, it's an attitude." – Ralph Marston
1. Skeleton raid
Alright, out of all the outdoor halloween decoration ideas, this is one of the funniest ones. Perfectly in tone with the spirit of the holiday – creative, spooky, and hilarious. You might actually scare a few neighbours for a second or two while they walk by and see the skeleton raid for the first time.
Also, special attention to that one skeleton opening the basement door and looking like he has no clue what is going on.
2. Front door spooky forest look
Revamp your front door to look like a spooky forest, complete with pumpkins, thin dry branches, and a wreath made of twigs decorated with simple paper bats. What lies beyond the spooky forest? You’ll have to enter to find out.
And hey, this might be a great time to repaint the front door!
3. Upside down bats
A simple but charming idea: cut out from black thick paper a few bats that you can then hang upside down on your front porch. Using thick paper is better to prevent them from flopping around and not lose their form!
4. Night owls
Same principle as before, but instead you’ll be using owl cutouts and some twigs (that you can spray paint black for an even cooler effect). These watchful guardians will keep an eye out for any stranger lurking too close to your witchy home!
5. Pumpkin scarecrow
Scarecrows can actually scare some people when they’re too realistic – at least from afar! But this harmless fellow will guard your main entrance while keeping a friendly tone with strangers. He resents being called a “scarecrow" because at heart, all he wants is to make new friends!
To make him, you’ll need some old clothes that you can fill with hay or any other filling just to keep them upright, and a carved pumpkin to serve as head for our gentleman friend.
6. Clumsy witch
Halloween decoration is all about the wacky and unexpected. Get yourself a basket of apples and add a clumsy witch for extra charm. The easiest way to make one of these is to check local clothing stores for unused mannequins – the owners often don’t mind giving up old parts either for free or for a small fee. Then you can dress it up however you like!
The apples being poisonous though… I’ll let you in on a secret: they’re not actually poisonous, they’re just so delicious our clumsy witch made the sign to protect them!
7. Unusual friends
Here’s a fun way to exercise front porch Halloween decoration from the inside. Literally.
Cut out some fun decals with a pair of scissors (you can find a lot of inspiration online, by the way) and tape them to your front window. When it’s night and the lights are on inside, your decals will pop out even more!
If you’re inspired, you can take this opportunity to redecorate the entryway – not just for Halloween, but for good!
8. Bad directions
This is a very fun piece of decoration that you can place near your mailbox at the very entrance to your lot – a signpost pointing to your favorite spooky places from movies, TV shows, and books.
Obviously these don’t have to make a lot of sense, you can write jokes or even add spooky drawings to the signs.
9. Ghostly ping pongs
Combine string lights with ping pong balls to create these adorable ghosts that will haunt your front porch. Just poke a hole on the ping pong ball, draw a funny face on it and attach it to your string light. Add a small piece of cheesecloth previously dipped in Mod Podge to each of them and your ghosts are ready!
I like to pretend they’re all trying to outspook each other, but in reality they’re just happy it’s Halloween so that they can spook passersby all day long!
10. DIY Lantern
Lanterns are perfect decorative pieces for Halloween, but the best part about these is that you can improvise them out of simple wooden picture frames. As long as they’re made of wood, you can nail them together to create a small box (doesn’t have to be perfect) and place a LED candle on the inside.
Print out some scary Halloween artwork that you like on regular paper and you should have a cool effect!
