Did you know this holiday was originally known as Decoration Day? Of course, that sounds a bit too cheery for the intention of this date, so it got switched to Memorial Day. It’s the time of the year to remember and pay our respect to those who died in service of the American armed forces. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials on this day, but there are also people who prefer to decorate their homes in honor of our fallen soldiers.

Paper Chain Fences
This super easy yet super cute decoration is great to represent America’s colors! And it’s perfect if you have a fence like this in your front (or even back) yard. All you need is red and blue paper (white one is optional), some scissors and some glue. This decoration is actually quite fun to make and you can even call out the kids to help you out and take the opportunity to tell them the history of Memorial Day.
Wooden Flag
This wooden flag is somewhat similar to a wreath, even though it’s not round like one, it’s supposed to give your door that extra attention. There’s nothing more patriotic than the United States flag, right? It’s a wonderful way to show that you care by honoring those who fought in the name of our country.
Cupcake Liners Wreath
Came here looking for an easy decor idea? This is the one for you! You’ll need:
- Festive cupcake liners
- Round foam wreath
- Hot glue gun and stick
- Scissors
You can also find a red string and make some mini stars for an extra decoration. This one is quite fun to make as well, but keep the kids away from this one as you’re working with a hot glue gun!
Food Decor
What about decorating with food? That’s one idea to follow. Many people enjoy gathering family and friends around not only to honor the lost soldier’s memories, but also to appreciate that they’re living in a free country because of it. So having awesome food recipes that are also decorative is a great way to welcome everyone in your house.
Table Centerpiece
Since we’re talking about having people over on Memorial Day, one more thing you can do - aside from serving red, white, and blue food - is to have a patriotic centerpiece! That can be, as seen in the photo above, blue bases with red and white flowers, or a red vase with blue and white flowers, or even a white jar with blue and red flowers. You get the idea, right? You’re totally free to get super creative with this one!
