Furniture isn’t hard to purchase for the most part, we simply look for what we need. Couches, chairs, desks, it’s all pretty self-explanatory. But what if you’re looking for a more unique furniture piece to add something special to your home?

Strangely enough, if you look for “creative furniture out there, you’ll probably find tons of indeed creative designs, but they can be so odd that you might as well only find them in a museum of modern art – where would you even purchase such a piece?

What we’re looking into here today is quite different. These picks are indeed unique, but still easy enough to find for a reasonable price. They are comfy, exquisite, but most importantly, still useful!

1. Chesterfield

The Chesterfield Sofa design is of mysterious origins, tracing back to somewhere between the 17th and 18th century in Victorian England. Nowadays everyone is familiar with its particular style even if they never owned one, but few people know it’s of british origin.

Originally they were made of leather which is incredibly stylish, but also expensive and requires some decent care for the modern homeowner. Because of that, you can find these sofas in other materials as well, but still retaining the same design of deep buttons and rolled arms with a low back height.

It’s a royal-looking unique sofa from another era that will surely add a lot of charm to any modern home!

2. Modern chest

I’ve debated whether I should go for an antique wooden chest or a more modern version. In the end I went with the modern version because the antique look, though gorgeous aesthetically, might be harder to fit into a modern home because of its very distinct style.

So for a more flexible but still unique approach, consider addings chests as pieces of furniture to your home. You can find them in different colors and sizes, and they can be used for the simple purpose of adding visual variety to your room, but also for the obvious practical purpose of storing things.

You can also use stacked chests as a creative coffee table for the living room, if they’re big enough, or even small ones as unique nightstands for the bedroom.

If you’re looking for more creative ways to decorate like this, consider talking to a professional decorator or designer!

3. Chaise longue

The chaise longue is essentially an upholstery chair that’s long enough to support your legs, popularised during the 16th century in France. It’s commonly seen in therapist’s offices for the patient to relax in, but it’s not uncommon to find them in living rooms or home offices just as a place to lay down and relax.

The unique chair design is very attractive since it creates a sense of exclusivity for its purpose – it’s a personal addition to the room that you can still use daily. Plus, there’s a reason it’s used in a therapeutic way – it’s extremely comfortable and relaxing.

4. Hutch

The hutch is a much more recent and common type of furniture, becoming more popular in the 18th and 19th century – so much so that many american homes have hutches as that old fashioned unique furniture that stands out from the rest.

A hutch is fairly easy to find and comes in different sizes too, but it always retains the same principle of serving as a fashionable place for storing or displaying glass and kitchenware in a dining room or near the kitchen.

5. Footstool

Now here’s a curveball for you: how old do you think the history of the footstool goes?

I was surprised to discover they date back to Ancient Egypt. But hey, I wouldn’t be surprised if someone discovered the first instances of footstools traced back to cavemen who made a pile of rocks and used it to rest their tired feet, because for such a simple concept, it’s still very luxurious.

The footstool is well known but being such a small piece of furniture, not many homes consider getting one – either because they never had one and don’t miss it, or because they think it’s not a big deal anyway.

Since the idea here is to have unique pieces, the footstool can be just that – a subtle and inexpensive, but still useful and practical addition to your living room!
