While we’re still in January, I want to highlight what you can expect to see in 2022 when it comes to home improvement trends. Hopefully, by checking out these trends you can find something to inspire you for new projects!
And there are definitely some interesting ones. We’re in the tail end of the pandemic, but not out of the woods yet. Many homeowners have readjusted their expectations for remote work and comfort at home because of this, but that’s not the only major influence.
Technology for smart homes is also becoming more accessible than ever, leading homeowners to adopt the quality of life improvements that come along with it.
But let’s not spoil the whole thing here, eh? Here are the most notable home improvement trends for 2022!
Kitchen islands
Kitchen islands have always been useful, but they still flew under the radar for many homeowners. That started to change and this trend will only grow even more this year.
The reason is obvious: people are starting to catch on to the wonders of kitchen islands. Combine that with the fact that they’re fairly simple to implement in your existing kitchen, and it’s easy to see why their popularity is on the rise.

Bathroom upgrade
Bathrooms are commonly relegated to function-only, meaning they get very little in terms of quality of life updates, additions, and general revamp. People tend to favor other parts of the house and the bathroom just stays as it is, as long as it’s working.
That’s starting to change. People are understanding more and more how important it is to give the bathroom some love on the budget, mostly because it’s so rewarding.
Think about it: wouldn’t you want to have the absolute best when you’re at your most private rest? Soaking in the tub, grooming by the vanity, taking a relaxing shower after work – the more quality you can add to these moments, the better you will feel.
The color of the year
In case you haven’t heard, Pantone created a brand new color for their annual color of the year pick. Lucky for us, they came up with Very Peri, a shade of blue with violet red undertones that makes it extremely versatile to use… almost anywhere.
It can be used as decoration, wall accents, or even as the main color in your interior design plans. If you have a room that is mostly white, consider giving it a dash of Very Peri – many have already done so and the results speak for themselves.
Flexible spaces
Back in 2020 when the pandemic hit the world by storm, many homeowners had to adapt to working from home, which led to a demand for more flexible spaces.
This trend has since persisted with many companies now continuing to offer remote work opportunities, which in turn, generated its own interior design trend: flexible spaces.
Not every house can afford to have a room exclusively for a home office, so the compromise has been to create more flexible spaces. Living rooms with an office desk, lightly separated by zones instead of walls, make for an open and flexible space, for example.
High tech
A few years ago, the idea of having a smart home seemed like a hefty investment, but this has since changed. Now, a single device is enough to bring your home into the future.
Devices like the Google Nest or the Amazon Echo are great examples. They work seamlessly with your phone and respond to commands that add a bunch of utility to your home, including answering questions hands-free but also being able to communicate with other devices in your home.
For example, you can control lights, alarms, and even AC units by simply talking to one o those devices.
If that sounds enticing to you, then maybe this is the year to go all-in on smart homes. These devices should only get better and gain more capabilities in the near future.
Outdoor spaces
Outdoor spaces are always a great home improvement project to invest in. There’s a lot of versatility inherent in it too – you can take a space and bring a table and a few chairs for an easy space to hang out with friends and family.
But if you want something more elaborate, you can build a deck or a pergola to create an area with cover, giving your outdoor space even more versatility. But there are more beautiful outdoor spaces that fit the budget.
